A Month in Trefoille

It was around dinner time that Oliphard finally returned to his manor. Lyonesse had entertained their guests for a time, and eventually they had offered to assist with any more of the cleanup or organizing that needed to be done before the wizard’s return. Oliphard was indeed ecstatic to see Trystan and Ysolt again and completely delighted that his magical chest, and all of what it contained, had been returned to him. Over dinner, they described the tale of how Hector had retrieved the chest, and the younger mage simply chuckled and noted that perhaps they needed a bard to travel along with them to help embellish the story of their heroics a bit more.

As for his promised reward, Oliphard offered to teach them the better basics for using and sensing magic. Enchantments of all nature were his specialty, and due to the state of his mansion, any finances he had were tied up with the renovations and rebuilding of the city. Hector felt a little put out by the offer, until Ysolt explained that it would come in handy if he happened to encounter any cursed or enchanted traps. While it would take a month for either of them to show progress from their tutoring, they each learned some valuable lessons in the magical arts. They even utilized one of the smoulder fish they previously caught during one of their lessons.

Tryston, Ysolt, and Hector each gain 1 point in Magic.

However, having spent that time assisting and sensing how the others were also helping to rebuild around the estate and the city, Lyonesse felt obligated to support them even more in return. With Oliphard’s approval, the young mage requested that she join the trio on their journey. “There is much of the world I have yet to experience. Much of which I have been purposefully sheltered from because of my blindness. I have proven within my trusted circle that I am capable, but now it’s time to expand further into the world. To prove to myself that I can go anywhere if I so desire it,” she explained to the others, who asked for the night to discuss the matter in private.

Ysolt was in complete support of traveling with such a resourceful and promising mage. Hector continued to find her abilities baffling, and wasn’t sure whether she’d be helpful or in the way. Trystan would end up being the deciding vote, but he honestly didn’t feel one way or another. There were doubts, but she had impressed him as well. Late in the night, he crept into her quarters with the intention of testing her skills. He made it to the foot of her bed before she bolted out from beneath the covers, gripped the hilt of the blade she kept by her bedside table, and swung determinedly toward him.

Drawing his sword to deflect her attack, he grabbed her arm and flung her away from the bed. Though she stumbled, her bare feet slapped loudly against the wooden floor. The sound waves gave her enough to help her avoid tumbling into a nearby chair and instead regain her balance against a wardrobe. “Trystan, why would you?” Lyonesse gasped out as she turned her head toward him. Her white-streaked hair draped about her shoulders, her bangs haphazardly falling over half of her face as the wayfarer stood there in silence. What little sound he emitted was his panted breath from the tussle.

Trystan sheathed his sword as he answered truthfully, “I needed to know. I needed to see for myself if you’re capable of defending yourself.” Her brow furrowed with disapproval. “Are yo-?” “I meant not to offend, Miss Dewin,” he quickly interrupted the spite in her voice. “The world is a dangerous place, and neither one of us can promise to protect you. There are times that even my honed skills have failed me.” The mage lowered her guard at his explanation. He had every right to test her, especially if his own experiences had proven his own weaknesses.

Resolutely, she padded over to him and placed a firm hand upon his shoulder. Again, her face betrayed the eerie sensation of locking eyes with the man she could not see. “I understand. We cannot learn if we do not fail at first. There are so many things I wish to learn,” she said earnestly, which brought a small smirk of recognition to Trystan’s freckled, scruffy face. “We’ll help you prepare tomorrow, and together we’ll leave the following morning,” he agreed, letting her join them. Her face blossomed with a brilliant smile before she thanked him with a peck on the cheek.
