On the Road Again

As much as Oliphard offered to teleport them to Marlock City, Trystan insisted that Lyonesse needed to start her new journey on foot. To truly get a better understanding of how traveling without magic works. After all, their resources were limited, and she was not nearly as skilled as her mentor in the magical arts. Hector honestly wanted to take the wizard up on his offer, as he had grown comfortable sleeping in a nice bed and not having to scrounge for food. The sooner they got to the city, the closer they would be to an inn later that evening. “Three of us will at least be staying at an inn,” Trystan stated before Ysolt had a chance to claim they could stay at the House of Priests. “What does that mean?” Hector asked with a crooked brow, wondering who had special accommodations. “Ysolt will be staying at the House of Priests, which is her right and duty as a priestess of Maka,” Trystan explained as they passed through the southern gate of Trefoille and headed down the western road toward the metropolis.

“I have never stayed at an inn before,” the young mage said with a sense of excitement. “Or was accommodated by a religious order.” The rogue had stayed at plenty of inns when he could afford it. “So, the House of Priests is only for priests and priestesses?” Hector asked, sensing that Trystan was purposely refusing to stay there. “No,” the dark priestess answered before the wayfarer could interject. “Trystan stay there,” she stated resolutely, though before she could explain, the taller man spoke up, “In trade for some chores. We picked up a couple of jobs, but one of them didn’t pan out. I don’t intend to intrude on their hospitality again if I can help it.” Trystan’s tone was curt on the matter, causing a momentary silence as neither spellcaster nor burglar dared ask for more information on what happened. Ysolt quickly realized that their meeting and her earlier assistance were still a sour memory for him.

Even after all the good they had accomplished since leaving the city. The priestess was determined to make it up to him. She just wasn’t sure how yet.

ROLL 1 DIE.

Score: 5 – Find a Sword ( Ordinary Weapon ).

The days spent on the main road between Trefoille and Marlock City went without much incident. There were regular patrol posts, ensuring security for the supply and merchant caravans. Hector remained on his best behavior, as he didn’t want to cause an incident for his companions. Lyonesse marveled at how different it felt to walk for the better part of the day, for a handful of days in a row. Her feet were sore, and she was left exhausted by the time they made camp. Yet, she slept soundly until it was her turn to keep vigil. Ysolt enjoyed having the extra company. Trystan was always so quiet, and the mage didn’t mind chatting with the priestess. However, the rogue found some of their topics of conversation a little peculiar. Did they have to discuss the differences between divine and arcane magic so much?

Of the four of them, Trystan did not walk along the road at all times. Sometimes he was joined by Hector, but for the most part the ranger was scouting the areas beyond the road for possible threats or ambushes. On their second day of travel, he stumbled upon a campsite that appeared to be at least a day old. When the others noticed he had stopped, they ventured out to him to make sure he was alright. Lyonesse confirmed that the campsite had been abandoned for a long time. Between her heightened senses and his keen tracking skills, they determined that whoever had been resting there left in a hurry. Whoever it was left behind a sword of simple make. It didn’t belong to any of the soldiers that patrolled the area; the design was all wrong. Hector packed it with his gear, so it could be sold once they reached the metropolis.
